Mangulam: Public Works Department has decided to resume construction works of important roads which were halted due to the lockdown. As per reports, work will restart after April 14 when the first phase of the lockdown ends. PWD has approached the government for approval.
Although the idea is to complete the construction works before the monsoon, it is not sure whether they will be able to procure all the equipment required.
The repair works of National Highways, central governmen-funded roads and state- district roads are the ones where construction works were stalled post the lockdown. Construction works were completed 20 to 90 percent for most roads. If it is not completed before the monsoon all the efforts put in so far would be in vain. The PWD department has enquired about the stalled projects in each department. From this, the list of projects which will have to be restarted immediately has been prepared.
The construction work will be resumed only by adhering to all the safety precautions. Most of the labourers from Tamil Nadu have returned to their places after the lockdown was declared. Only the labourers from North India are left. So there is a chance of shortage of labourers. Since all the mines and crusher units remain closed, it will be hard to get construction equipment as well. Meanwhile, central government has said that the construction period of big scale projects will be extended till the time lockdown continues.
